Center for Building Science and Performance (CBSP)

The Center for Building Science and Performance Knowledge Community (CBSP) promotes architects as leaders in the application of building science and in the use of high-performance design criteria, codes and standards, and in programming, designing and managing building performance. CBSP aims to educate the profession on these principles and how they influence architectural expression, and investigates and disseminates knowledge regarding building performance, building enclosure and building technology.

New BEC Chapters Bring Total to 18
The Building Enclosure Council, a joint venture of the AIA and the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) BETEC Council, now has 18 local chapters around the country. BEC-Atlanta was chartered in November 2006, and BEC-St Louis, BEC-Honolulu, and BEC-Miami were chartered this year. BEC-Los Angeles has scheduled an inaugural meeting for the end of October. Discussions are continuing regarding potential chapters in Detroit and San Francisco, and there is an interest in forming a chapter in a southwestern desert region. BEC chapters are a cooperative venture between the NIBS BETEC Council and the local or state AIA components. If anyone is interested in establishing a BEC local chapter, please contact George Blackburn, AIA, or Wagdy Anis, FAIA.

Become a disaster assistance employee (DAE)! There are currently shortfalls in engineers, 406 specialists, and other technical field positions in mitigation. To apply, submit your resume to fema-hm-cadre@dhs.gov with a subject line of DAE Employment Inquiry.

Take the Resilient Home program survey! The Resilient Home (RH) program is part of the Department of Homeland Security’s Southeastern Region Research Initiative and has as its primary goal the desire to speed the return of residents to their homes following natural disasters. This survey is part of a comprehensive needs assessment that the RH program is conducting to help determine the research and education tasks necessary to minimize, eliminate, and/or successfully mitigate the effects of natural disasters on housing. It is important that architects weigh in on this assessment, so please take the time to complete the survey!
