Washington, D.C., April 8, 2008 — The American Institute of Architects (AIA) today released Architecture: Celebrating the Past, Designing the Future, a collection of essays, vignettes and profiles from 70 of most the influential architects, journalists and scholars from around the world. Offering a candid look at the profession’s past 150 years, the book also provides an in-depth analysis about the role of the AIA architect in creating the vibrant, sustainable communities of the future. It is being unveiled during National Architecture Week 2008 (April 7-13) in Washington, D.C.

In addition to narrative from contributors such as renowned architects Thom Mayne, FAIA, and Robert A.M. Stern, FAIA, scholar James Steele and journalist Paul Goldberger, Hon. AIA, the book contains 560 photographs that depict some of the greatest architectural collaborations and contributions of our time.

“This fascinating new book will help readers understand how architecture influenced the creation of our cities, as well as how architects will design the built environment of the future,” says AIA Executive Vice President/CEO Christine McEntee. “Never has the demand been so great for the coordinated creativity of the architect and community leaders in realizing our shared goals.”

The book covers a variety of subjects including: Architecture Education, Architecture as Art, Creating Community in the Midst of Diversity and Innovation in Office Design.

“Framing topics global climate change, education, security and affordable housing in terms of people's quality of life, this book celebrates design and the notion that humans are partners with nature with a responsibility for determining the destiny of our planet,” said RK Stewart, FAIA, Hon. RAIC, and 2007 AIA President.

Architecture: Celebrating the Past, Designing the Future is published by Visual Reference Publications and will be available for purchase online at the AIA bookstore.
